Default No Sh*t: McGwire Admits Steriods

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4816607

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.

"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

Better late than never I suppose.

In another story ESPN is reporting water is wet, Elisha Cuthbert is hot, and GR is a giant dumbass.

Did you mean "admitted it earlier"? Because, you know he did admit it a few years ago, right?

Somehow I bet he missed that story.

So he just managed about 25% of the vote for the HOF last week. And this week he comes out and drops that on us. Nice timing.

Also, he was going to get hit with this now that he's a hitting coach with STL, so might as well deal with it now.

I've never thought McGwire was a bad guy, even though he was clearly on steroids. I think the timing of this announcement is a bit self-serving, though. Would have been nice to see him make this admission and apology 5 years ago when he didn't have immediate interests that could benefit from it. Oh well.

If it were really that self serving wouldn't he have been better served to cop to it six weeks ago before the HOF balloting? Most people just want these guys to own up to it then they move on. McGwire may not have gotten in based on an admission, but I think the 25% would have been much higher.

Dont you think he was trying to get a better gauge on what the voters would do this year before he finally admitted it.

I think an admission right before the vote would have been too transparent. I think he knew he had to wait until after the vote. What he's actually doing is copping to it now, so next year come voting time, he's done his mea culpa, but his steroid use isn't fresh on everyone's mind.

This is my theory on it. Get out of my head.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad the guy came out and admitted it, regardless of the circumstances. I suppose as just a hitting coach he could have tried to avoid the media and not talk about it, and rode that strategy out until something had to give. Maybe he could have gone the rest of his life without discussing it publicly. I do get the sense that he hated living with that burden, and coming clean was probably pretty cathartic for him. So good for him. I still have to question the timing though.

Yes. My point was Pete was about 14 years too late with his admission.

I think this has a lot more to do with letting the furor die down before spring training than it does HoF votes. There's no way the media wouldn't dog him about it constantly if he didn't say a word until then.

It still may not help, at least not much. This is their first crack at him basically since he retired.

I think it's a combination of easing the burden on himself, and avoiding the incessant questions once, as a hitting coach, he's forced to make himself available to the media. I don't think he's a bad guy, and hell, everyone else was doing it.

LaRussa can go piss up a rope, though. F*ck that a*shole.

I agree with this

I agree. I love all these jackasses crushing these guys. Imagine you are a player in the 90's and someone tells you "I have this stuff (HGH) that you can use that will extend your career, jack up your stats, make you a sh!t load of money, and by the way 90% of the guys who want your job are using it, do you want any?"

99.999999% of people would have done it and dealth with the consequences later. The only thing that pisses me off is that when these guys are caught red-handed (Bonds, Clemens, etc) they just don't cop to it. I can understand why guys did, there was tremendous pressure to do it, just don't fcuking lie about and act like you were some once in a lifetime talent that was somehow above it all.

He may have opened himself up to legal issues if he had done this (depending on what the satute of limitations is for illegal drug use).

MM said in the interview that he wanted to tell the whole story to congress but they would not give him a stay out of jail card. This was confirmed by a member of the panel.

Yeah I don't understand why congress wouldn't give him immunity. Apparently he made it clear behind closed doors that he had used PEDs, and was willing to talk about it if he didn't have to worry about legal repercussions. I don't think most people want these guys to be prosecuted, they just want the truth.
